On International E-Waste Day, the Maxima Project is proud to announce its participation in the European Week for Waste Reduction (EWWR). The 2025 edition of the campaign will focus on WEEE (Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment) — a critical issue as Europe continues to seek sustainable solutions to the growing challenge of electronic waste.

The Maxima project contributes tangible technologies and strategies that directly support EWWR’s mission: raising awareness, promoting reuse and repair, and improving recycling practices for electronic products and components.

 

How Maxima supports the EWWR and WEEE agenda

MIMPLUS (Recycling of Permanent Magnets)
Maxima works closely with MIMPLUS Technologies, which has developed sustainable magnet lifecycles using Metal Injection Molding (MIM) combined with short-loop recycling of magnet scrap. This collaboration aims to close the loop on magnet use in motors and devices, reducing reliance on virgin rare earth materials and supporting circular magnet production.

Höganäs (Smart Material Design)
Höganäs develops Soft Magnetic Composites (SMC) for Maxima motors, ensuring that only the necessary material is used while minimizing waste. This material-efficient approach not only conserves resources but also enhances recyclability and overall sustainability of motor components.

VUB & ENSAM (Life Cycle Assessment)
Partners at Vrije Universiteit Brussel (VUB) and ENSAM conduct comprehensive Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) studies that evaluate the entire lifespan of Maxima motors — from production and use to end-of-life. Their analyses demonstrate how advanced recycling strategies, such as magnet recovery and re-manufacturing, can significantly reduce environmental impacts and inform sustainable design decisions.

Emotors (Design for Disassembly and Circularity)
Emotors contributes by designing motors with modularity and disassembly in mind, enabling easier recovery and recycling of critical materials such as magnets and copper. This design-for-disassembly approach embodies the concept of “motors for circularity”, helping reduce e-waste and extend product lifecycles within the mobility sector.

Together, these efforts reflect Maxima’s vision of aligning circular economy principles with advanced motor innovation — reducing e-waste, improving resource efficiency, and fostering a more sustainable mobility ecosystem.
