
The MAXIMA project is proud to be part of the 7th edition of the IEEE Workshop on Electrical Machine Design, Control and Diagnostics (WEMDCD), taking place in Valletta, Malta, from April 9–10, 2025. This prestigious event is jointly organized by the Department of Electrical Engineering of the University of Malta and the Department of Engineering “Enzo Ferrari” (DIEF) of the University of Modena and Reggio Emilia.

This paper delivers a detailed parametric and comparative analysis of two leading axial flux electric machine topologies—dual-rotor and dual-stator—both using concentrated tooth-coil windings and surface-mounted magnets. Focusing on energy losses during the WLTP cycle, the study sheds light on the critical performance trade-offs and optimization opportunities for electric propulsion in Battery Electric Vehicles (BEVs).
The findings contribute directly to MAXIMA’s mission: developing next-generation electric machine technologies that are efficient, sustainable, and aligned with Europe’s zero-emission mobility goals.
